On a recent survey conducted by PayScale.com between April and June of this year and published by the Wall Street Journal, 50% of college graduates with a major in advertising responded they were satisfied or very satisfied to the question: ‘Overall, how satisfied are you with your current career path up to now?' Advertising majors ranked fourth on the survey that included 10,800 current workers who graduated between 1999 and 2010. For the most part, however, advertising agencies now prefer graduates with a liberal arts degree.For the different types of jobs in advertising, hiring managers seek motivated and optimistic professionals. More specifically, account executive candidates need to be well organized to handle delicate situations with clients, manage deadlines with coworkers from other departments and coordinate teams to get things done. Advertising agencies stress that creative jobs are difficult to get without relevant work experience, yet they suggest juniors, seniors and recent graduates to get an internship and develop their portfolio. Strong analytical skills are needed to get into media research and an excellent negotiating ability is necessary for media buyers.Businesses are still cautious of how they spend their money and who they hire to work for them.  In an effort to combat the effects of the 2008 financial crisis, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is considering to purchase long-term Treasury bonds. According to the WSJ, this would push down long-term interest rates and boost economic growth. This might stimulate Businesses to invest, e.g. hire new personnel, and thereby ease consumer's financial limitations and motivate them to spend more.How does this affect people interested in a job in advertising? The actions the Fed plans to take might prove beneficial to most industries, yet some might benefit more than others. The Nasdaq Stock Market does well thanks to the technology stocks it exchanges. For example, on October 15, 2010, Apple and Google accounted for 20.23 of the index's 24.5 point gain. Apple's augmented earnings from the new iPad, and Google's increased revenue due to display ads, which include banner, interactive and video ads, and Google services used on mobile devices, triggered their worthy performance in the exchange.The Web has created a new platform where organizations can publish multimedia documents on the Internet. Advertising on the Web is less expensive than print production, or developing TV and radio commercials. Furthermore, businesses can laser target their audience, e.g. Google's AdWords, and thereby obtain a higher ROI. Novel interactive ads in Youtube appeal to the curiosity of viewers who are used to more traditional TV and radio commercials.How advertisers mix the different elements available on the web is up to their own imagination. Yet, thoughtless claims to promote a products or service produce more damage than good in the long run. Thorough planning, ethics and creativity are the pillars of any solid endeavor, and advertising is no exception. As older channels of communication blend with the new, job seekers who are on the lookout for new forms of promotion and have fun doing it, might enjoy a job in advertising.
