The Only 2 Rules you Will Ever Need to Succeed!

Rule 1| Learn your boss’ jobRule 2| Teach your job to your sub-ordinateThat’s it.The only two rules you will ever need to succeed.Rule 1| Learn & start doing your boss’ jobWhy?You want to grow. You want to take on additional responsibility. You want a chance to prove that you can.You want your boss to trust you.You have to make her life easier.By learning her job, you can start appreciating the pressures, take decisions based on broader perspective, carry out mundane tasks for her.By learning her job, you can start preparing for your day in the sun. This is a fantastic opportunity to do all that you can and yet have someone else responsible for your actions.Make mistakes, learn.Give your boss an opportunity to teach you.We all love a good, attentive, eager student.Learning her job will also make you indispensable to her.Does it give you more leverage at work? Sure. But here is my favourite reason for doing this.Consider this. What is a company paying someone for? Doing their jobs? So if you are doing your boss’ job, who should get paid for it? YOUSooner than later someone will realize you are the one truly doing everything! So now the how since you have the why.Ask/OfferStart Small.Seek Feedback.Repeat.That’s it. It is as simple as that.Ask for something to do/ Offer to do some simple, mundane tasks.Do something so innocuous, so simple and mundane; she is happy you took it away from her. Some common forms of activities include, filing, typing, preparing reports, following up, etc.Seek Feedback. Ask if you did it right. Ask if you could improve. Ask if she was glad you did it!Go back to her now and ask for something bigger and ask her why she does it.Understand her job.Very soon, you will be called in and requested to “handle” things for her.Rule 2| Teach your job to your sub-ordinate.Why?You need time to do your boss’ work, that’s why!!On a more serious note, the ability to teach someone else displays in no uncertain terms your ability to lead, to train, to manage team players and grow your human capital. On a more devilish note, the trick is to unload all your unproductive, repetitive, mundane tasks to someone eager to take them on. That way, you have time for the more “challenging” tasks.A manager who has time to talk, listen and share information is such a rare sight, that others want to know how she does it.Here is the answer ‘Teach your job to your sub-ordinate’Finally, someone in human resources will notice that they are paying you for nothing. All your work is done by your sub-ordinate.They cant ask you to go coz you are so valuable to your boss, so all they can do is to promote you and officially let you handle everything and take responsibility for it.There you have it!The only 2 rules you need to succeed!CheersPrabhjot Bedi
